NSHE Board of Regents Reflects on the Legacy of Dr. Lois Tarkanian at Quarterly Meeting
The 海角乱伦社区 (NSHE) Board of Regents took a heartfelt moment during their quarterly meeting to share personal stories and reflections in memory of Dr. Lois Tarkanian, a devoted Regent and tireless advocate for education and public service.
鈥淩eflecting on Dr. Tarkanian鈥檚 life and legacy reminded all of us of the extraordinary impact she had on Nevada,鈥 said Board Chair Amy J. Carvalho. 鈥淗er dedication to education, her kindness, and her leadership have left a lasting mark on our state. She inspired so many through her actions, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to honor her memory together.鈥
Dr. Tarkanian鈥檚 career in education began as a classroom teacher before she advanced to roles as a speech pathologist, principal, and university instructor. She was a pioneer in creating opportunities for students with disabilities, founding innovative inclusion programs to support their success. Her belief in the transformative power of education was a constant throughout her life.
Her connection to Nevada began in 1973 when she and her family moved to Las Vegas. Her late husband, Jerry Tarkanian, was the legendary head basketball coach at UNLV, a role that established the family鈥檚 lasting legacy in the state. Yet, Dr. Tarkanian鈥檚 influence extended far beyond her family鈥檚 ties to athletics.
鈥淭aking a moment to reflect on Dr. Tarkanian鈥檚 contributions was both emotional and uplifting,鈥 said Vice Chair Jeffrey Downs. 鈥淚t reminded us of her incredible ability to bring people together for a greater purpose. Her legacy will continue to guide and inspire us as we work to build on the foundations she helped create.鈥
In 2020, Dr. Tarkanian was elected to the NSHE Board of Regents, where she brought a wealth of experience and a deep passion for higher education. Her thoughtful leadership and commitment to students enriched Nevada鈥檚 higher education institutions and the broader community. Her dedication to public service extended to roles on the Clark County School Board and as a Las Vegas City Councilwoman, where she served Ward 1 for over a decade.
鈥淒r. Lois Tarkanian embodied the values we strive for in higher education鈥攃ompassion, commitment, and a belief in the potential of every student,鈥 said Chancellor Patricia Charlton. 鈥淲hile she is greatly missed, her legacy will live on in the students and communities she devoted her life to serving.鈥
The 海角乱伦社区 extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Tarkanian鈥檚 family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
