NSHE Board of Regents Awards President Emeritus Status to Joyce Helens
The 海角乱伦社区 (NSHE) Board of Regents awarded Joyce Helens President Emeritus status in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Great Basin College (GBC) and higher education in Nevada. Helens served as President of GBC from 2017 to 2024, leading the institution through a period of growth, collaboration, and resilience. During her tenure, Helens spearheaded initiatives that strengthened GBC鈥檚 reputation and expanded its impact across rural Nevada, including:
- Establishing the Mining Center of Excellence to support workforce development in Nevada鈥檚 mining industry.
- Securing funding for the Winnemucca campus addition in partnership with the William N. Pennington Foundation and the University of Nevada, Reno, earning the Cashman Good Government Award for NSHE.
- Overseeing the renovation and expansion of the Welding Technology Lab, creating new opportunities for students and the local economy.
- Promoting collaboration within NSHE, including shared services initiatives with UNR and Truckee Meadows Community College to enhance operational efficiency.
- Supporting students鈥� academic success, culminating in her 2024 receipt of the Phi Theta Kappa International Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.

President Emeritus status is granted to retired presidents with at least five years of service and is a reflection of their exceptional leadership and dedication.
