NSHE Board of Regents Awards President Emeritus Status to Joyce Helens

The 海角乱伦社区 (NSHE) Board of Regents awarded Joyce Helens President Emeritus status in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Great Basin College (GBC) and higher education in Nevada. Helens served as President of GBC from 2017 to 2024, leading the institution through a period of growth, collaboration, and resilience. During her tenure, Helens spearheaded initiatives that strengthened GBC鈥檚 reputation and expanded its impact across rural Nevada, including:

  • Establishing the Mining Center of Excellence to support workforce development in Nevada鈥檚 mining industry.
  • Securing funding for the Winnemucca campus addition in partnership with the William N. Pennington Foundation and the University of Nevada, Reno, earning the Cashman Good Government Award for NSHE.
  • Overseeing the renovation and expansion of the Welding Technology Lab, creating new opportunities for students and the local economy.
  • Promoting collaboration within NSHE, including shared services initiatives with UNR and Truckee Meadows Community College to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Supporting students鈥 academic success, culminating in her 2024 receipt of the Phi Theta Kappa International Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.

鈥淧resident Helens dedicated her career to serving the citizens of rural Nevada, tirelessly working to build healthy, vibrant communities and empowering individuals to achieve the  American Dream. Her unwavering commitment to fostering educational opportunities and improving the lives of rural Nevadans makes her truly deserving of this recognition,鈥 said Governor Joe Lombardo in a letter of recommendation.

鈥淧resident Helens was instrumental in shaping Great Basin College into a stronger institution for the students and communities of rural Nevada,鈥 said Board of Regents Chair Amy J. Carvalho. 鈥淗er leadership set a foundation for continued growth and success, and we are grateful for her many contributions.鈥

鈥淧resident Helens made a lasting impact on Great Basin College through her leadership and dedication to students,鈥 said Chancellor Patricia Charlton. 鈥淗er efforts to enhance collaboration and expand opportunities have strengthened both the college and the communities it serves.鈥

President Emeritus status is granted to retired presidents with at least five years of service and is a reflection of their exceptional leadership and dedication.
